Tips for constructing Clay's Choice. From the background fabric cut twelve 3 1/2" squares.
Sew the four pairs of wine and background squares together. Press towards the wine.
Mark a diagonal line on the wrong-side of each of the eight remaining background squares. Place on the olive rectangle as shown and sew along the line on each of the four olive rectangles.
Carefully bring the corner of the background square over to match the underlying corner of the olive rectangle. While holding the corner, press straight down - don't push it over with the iron since this tends to distort the rectangle.
Trim the seam allowance to 1/4". Repeat the same process to join the remaining four background squares as shown.
Layout the pieces to form four units as shown below. Sew together. Even though one of the seams meets at an angle, you can still release the stitches and spin the intersection so the unit lays nice and flat.
Layout the four subunits as shown and sew together like a large 4-patch.
Release the stitches and spin the center seam intersection.
