Block of the Month - June Print E-mail

Tips for constructing the Hovering Hawks block that we will be drawing for at the June meeting.

From the background fabric cut six 3½" squares, and five 4¼" squares.
From the navy fabric cut three 4¼" squares.
From the gold fabric cut two 4¼" squares.

Layer three navy squares with three background squares, right sides together.
Layer two gold squares with two background squares, right sides together.

Cut along the diagonal.

Sew the triangle pairs together to form six navy/background half-square triangles (HST), and four gold/background HST's. Trim each to measure exactly 3½" square. (See previous months instructions for more detail on how to trim the HST's.)

Lay out squares to form block as pictured.

First we'll make the two navy/background four-patches. Sew the background squares to the navy/background HST's as shown.

Flip right over left, and then sew along the right-hand edge.

Press toward the background square.

Check to see that each rectangle measures 3½" by 6½".

Sew the rectangles together to form two four-patches as shown.

Release the seam intersection so you can spin the seams. (See previous months instructions for details on how to spin the seam intersection.)

Each of the four-patches should measure 6½" by 6½".

Layout remaining squares to form the other four-patch design.

Sew the rectangles together to form a four-patch. You should have two four-patches.

Release the seam intersection so you can spin the seams.
hovering022

Sew two of the four-patches together as shown to form two rectangles.

Release the intersection so you can spin the seams.

Last seam - sew the two rectangles together to form the block.
hovering027

Release the three seam intersections and spin the seams.

The block should measure 12½" by 12½".

And wha-la, another beautiful block.

I played around with my EQ6 program a little bit using 16 Hovering Hawks blocks. So if you happen to be the lucky one who wins the blocks, or maybe you decide to make a few more of your own, here are some possible layouts.
