Block of the Month - May News

Greetings Fellow Quilters, This is Janice with your Block of the Month update. I'd like to tell you about April's meeting, and then I have some very exciting "news"!
Six people turned in pretty "Fox and Geese" blocks at the morning meeting. They were won by first-time participant Deanie Hogan. Congratulations, Deanie!
Now for some fun news. Have you ever wished you could own a "Kern County Album" quilt top without doing all that pesky work? Well, listen up-- there may be a way!
Someone has kindly been making an extra block each month and having me set it aside for a quilt top. This will be a prize in a drawing for people who have made blocks this year. In other words, if you participate in our drawing at the meetings, you will be eligible for the drawing at the end of this year's Block of the Month program. By next meeting, I will have a list of participants.
I would appreciate it very much if you would stop by the table and add your name to the list if you've been in any of our drawings. Your name will be entered for each time you have brought a block. That means some of you can catch up to those who have already been playing. Don't you wanna have fun?
The block for May is the Bear Paw Variation (1-page PDF file, 130k). This is a slightly different look for a traditional pieced block. You may use from 3 to 10 colors. You need at least 1 light, 1 medium, and 1 dark value, but 2 or more of each may be used for a scrappier look. This block measures 9" square in the quilt and 9 1/2" square alone.
Also, check out the Oil Derrick Bonus Block pattern and instructions (2-page PDF file, 241k). As always, you may call me if you have questions, and I will return your call as soon as possible.
I am really looking forward to your participation!
Sincerely,
Janice Henderson, Chairman 872-0594

Advice from Singer
"Prepare yourself mentally for sewing. Think about what you are going to do. Never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisically. Good results are difficult when indifference predominates. Never try to sew with a sink full of dirty dishes or beds unmade. When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing.
When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Put on a clean dress. Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your sewing machine to dust your fingers at intervals. Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on. If, you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy sewing as you should."
