Quilts of Valor

A Quilt of Valor is not a charity quilt or a service quilt. They are a beautifully made pieced and quilted wartime quilt. In short, a QOV is a wartime quilt made by wartime quilters. We welcome your participation. Quilts of Valor provide comfort, love and pay tribute to these combat wounded.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation is not about politics. It’s about people.

How Quilts of Valor got started: Catherine Roberts of Seaford Delaware, a Blue Star Mother (Mother with a son or daughter in the military service) and with a son in the military her vision of the world changed. “Casualties no longer were just numbers but real men and women dying. Hidden behind the casualties were the wounded.” (Statistic: For every casualty there are 10 wounded.) Being a quilter, Catherine made an internet search and found Chaplin Kallerson at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C. who helps facilitate the disbursement of the quits.

The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover ALL war wounded and injured service members and veterans from the War on Terror with Quilts of Valor (QOV). Quilt specifications: 100% Cotton, Ideal size: 54” X 67”. Many members have already picked up quilt block patterns and block kits to make a quilt block for a quilt of valor. When we have collected 12 blocks for a quilt top we will assemble it and have it quilted. Each person who makes a quilt block, pieces it together or quilts it will be listed on the quilt label. Two members have already offered to quilt the first two quilts.

You too can help in one of following ways:

  • Make a 12 x 12 quilt block (you provide the fabric or pickup a block kit with fabric at the next meeting)
  • Donate fabric for a block or backing (100% cotton)
  • Donate quilt batting
  • Make a quilt top and/or backing
  • Machine Quilt a quilt of Valor

The membership voted at the April, 2008 meeting to make the Block of the Month for next year a “Quilt of Valor” program. With all the wonderful quilters and generous members in the Guild we should be able to make many quilts for our military men and women who have sacrificed so much for our Country. If you would like to help please contact Betty Davenport, at (661) 663-8800 or 808-1960 cell. You’ll be glad you did!

Of all the gifts you could give our U.S. Military, prayer is the best one. Please stop a moment and say a prayer for our troops (land, air and sea) in Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq and all around the world.

“Dear Heavenly Father, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need.”

A Special Thank You to Judy Leonard

I wish to express thanks to Judy Leonard for a wonderful trunk show (Wardrobe?) and her humorous stories about them. We had a fun and fabulous class with Judy, using old linens to design T-shirts. Many ladies got more than one pinned, ready to sew at home, and some finished their projects. It was wonderful to see all the items and new uses for old linens.

Membership News

You have most likely received your membership renewal form in the U.S. Mail recently. Remember to check the appropriate box, write your check and mail your renewal form and check in the envelope. Please make checks payable to Cotton Patch Quilters of Kern Co. or CPQ.

On July 1, the membership chair will send the membership roster to the newsletter chair for the membership directory. It is important that when you receive your renewal form it be returned as soon as possible, in order to have your current information in the directory.

We would like to have a recent picture of you for the directory, if you have not had your picture taken this year, please come to the quilt guild meeting and have your picture taken by Roberta Williams.

We want to accomplish two things:

  1. Receive all membership renewals by June 30.
  2. Have the membership directory ready by September.

With your cooperation, we can do this.
