My Mothers Apron

by Betty Davenport

I don’t think many people today know what an apron is. The principal use was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that it served as a potholder, for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children’s tears and even used on our ears. From the chicken coop it was used for caring eggs, fussy chicks, and half-hatched eggs to be finished in the oven. When company came aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. They wiped many a brow bent over the hot stove,. Chips and kindling wood were brought to the kitchen. From the garden, it carried vegetables. In the fall it was used to bring in apples. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture they could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, she walked out onto the porch, waved her apron and it was time to come in form fields for dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that ‘Old-time apron’.

Note about “My Mothers Apron”

With the new popularity of Aprons, I thought I would share something I received in an e-mail. I call it “My Mothers Apron” I made a few changes to personalize it for me. I have printed it on a card to share with my sisters, daughter, daughter-in-laws and granddaughters along with a handmade apron for Christmas. There are so many pretty apron patterns at the fabric shops I couldn’t resist. Ask me about one of my favorite (It is make from 2 1/2” strips, sewn into a large Log Cabin Pattern).
